Short Synopsis: Kayla had another great day. She spent 6 hours with the trach collar and 2 more hours in the chair. She stands up and walks side to side again for over 10 minutes. Six hours is a pivital time frame. It means she can be evaluated for s speech button, so she can begin to speak again. She has to learn how to swallow too. First they look for coughing and needs to be able to cough up flem from her throat.
The kind Russian respiratory therapist comes by often and gives her a "pep talk." Getting all parts of the body moving again is key to helping the lungs and everything else. She will move forward in every way.
There is very little medicine going in intravenously now....it's amazing! From 13 medicine boxes originally, it is now down to just a couple. There is a strong emphasis on keeping her blood thin to keep it all flowing through. She is getting heparin and coumadin.
In the early evening, we are told that she is being moved to a new ICU unit. There has been a buzz about this for 2 days. We are not sure what is going on, except the heat problem with the machinery was difficult to solve. We pack up all of her things and are ready for the move. Four-five people are needed to move the entire bed; the big PVAD machine; the pole with the IV boxes and Kayla in her bed. Down the hallway we roll and....into her new beautiful room,
which has to be two and a half times bigger!
It's in the new building - the Heart Center. It's only a year old and really incredible - state of the art. You go from the waiting room into a well lit hallway with windows on both sides and you know you are in the new building because the flooring is different and the sign up above says, entering the Heart Center and leaving the Milstein Building. When they build new buildings around here, they attach them together or they have walking bridges over streets to attach them.
Within minutes, we can tell there are no more heat problems. The air system is much better, fresher and because of the bigger size room, the heat dissipates immediately.
Kayla no longer needs the fans! We are on the up and up!
Wowzers!! This is all fantastic!
Long Story: It was tough driving in today because there was a lot of rain again. The Saw Mill gets flooded so easily. I was only coming in from Tarrytown so not far to go but rain, rain, rain! Dad said I hope you have your rain gear.
My car hydro-planed when I was by Yonkers. It really frightened me. I was in the fast lane, not going very fast, only about 50 mph. Drove through an unexpected puddle and I swerved into the next lane, fishtailing. Lucky for me there were no cars there. Back in control.
I slowed down to 30 mph and noticed that everyone else slowed down also.
Please God, please let me live to help my daughter!
The rain caused a back-up. I cross the Henry Hudson Bridge - there is a huge traffic stall. No one is moving. I want to get to the hospital...off at the first left exit - Exit 17, Dykeman Street.
Am dumped at 200th Street. The hospital is between 168th and 165th Street. I slide through a lot of yellows and an occasional red light...am impatient. At least the scenery is different. Down Broadway and it's a bit tricky...
Am now passing the George Washington Bridge. It is on my right and it looms and beckons from a strange angle, a mechanical erector looking set... Always majestic!
The prize at the end is a free parking spot. Today is my lucky day. I can see that the back-up is still going on. No one is moving on the bridge.

Oh noooo!!! Violet's eggs are no good! The New York Times reports that motherhood will not be coming to Violet and Bobby this year. Her eggs simply will not hatch. She laid them around March 24 and has dilligently been sitting on them for weeks, but no action!
The experts say they are not viable. They should have hatched in 32 days and....all the predictable dates went by...Day 36...and beyond. Not a chance at all for them to hatch.
"It is overwhelmingly likely, a Ohio hawk breeder expert with more than 40 years experience with raptors, that the eggs have been devoid of life all along - at least 1/4 of red-tails' first attempts to reproduce fail....probable culprit is that the pair just may have been inept lovers who have not mastered the birds and the bees..."
"So what happens now? For a while, the hawks will continue to go through the motions. She's going to be sitting. She doesn't count days. She just sits. She sees an egg and has a compulsion to do that...but that biological compulsion tends to evaporate as days get longer." Some will tend the eggs for a full month even after it's completely over.
"Over time, Violet and Bobby will begin spending less time on the nest and one day they will fly away and not come back."
What a disappointment....we have to wait until next year. They are a healthy pair and will come back and try again next year at the same nesting site....800 people watching, number of viewers is dropping...no more show.....bah humbug!

Can you tell me what you said about Kayla having a strong name? Also the three rabbi types? I can't remember the exact wording?
Am glad they killed Osama bin Laden and put him in the sea. He would have had great clout if they had taken him alive or if they had kept his dead body somewhere. In the sea no one can find him and continue to worship him. Yet they respected the muslins and buried him according to their religion, in a day at sea. Smart thinking all the way around.
I kept wondering if he was even alive somewhere. He had some serious health issues so I thought he would have died. He would not have been able to be treated at a hospital without the world knowing but then agian, maybe some doctors were secretly were brought to him.
How such an evil person could have lived is terribly sad for the rest of humanity.

What I wrote about the name is not 100% true. It's really a yiddish (Germanic offshoot) name and I translated it as if it came from Hebrew....instead of using the names of G-d which is "El," short for Elohim, we say Kale or Elokim which means power. Kayla has the power of G-d in her to fight the fight.
I don't recall the 3 Rabbi thing. What I did say was that there are the Synagogue Rabbis that have to give a sermon and be able to make decisions based on the Torah (what you call Old Testament) and the Oral Law. Then there are those that do advance studying to be up to date on the latest technology and make rulings based on the Oral and written teachings and then there are those like me, who did a lot of studying, but did not specialize in these details and am a teacher of the traditions and the writings to children. This also earns the title Rabbi.
Take care, regards and keep in touch.

3 a.m. - I was home in Ridgefield. Mike and I were watching TV in the livingroom. I fell asleep on the couch - I think around 9 p.m. and then woke up at midnight, spent a little more time with Mike, then wrote on the blog and then back to bed at 3:30 a.m. It works for me!

So glad to hear from you dear Steph...I didn't know how to reach you. Walter has a check up with his surgeon on the 23rd or 24th of May...I think we could come in a week or so presuming W continues to get better, however downtown is more fun - so I actually think it would be good for YOU to leave that nabe for a little.
But maybe when David settles in you may not be so keen to depart!!
You have been busy sharing your corner and it would be lovely to meet Kayla, so let's talk and coordinate.
Warmest to you and Kayla from just down the train line -

You night owl!! I am only up because I slept on the couch for hours! Had time to do one more posting and am now off to bed.
We have a new member in our corner gang - Steve. He also is a journalist so there we are, with our left hands, scribbling notes into our little notebooks. Clearly, we have started a news center in our humble corner...and to think you two were here for a day or two.
Anyway...I am sure we will still be here May 23-24...Kayla will be in the hospital for several months, maybe, and if we are lucky she will get a heart. She is as stubborn as Mordechai's mother!
I would love to come downtown. Can we go see the red-tailed hawk nest? It's at New York University near Washington Square, up on the 12th story ledge. I'll bring some powerful binoculars - ha! Actually, there are probably nature journalists or enthusiasts on ground level, following what the male is doing. Those who don't know what is going on think he is lazy, but he is on guard at several nearby posts driving all others hawks out of the area...protecting the female and the eggs. He also brings her up some choice pigeons and rats to eat...yuck!
